St. Louis
About an hour-plus south: world-class, mostly-free family attractions for a bigger day out.
Big-City Family Wins (many free!)
St. Louis is famous for free top-tier attractions—great for a large group on a budget:
- Saint Louis Zoo — consistently ranked among the best in the country, and free admission. Shady, walkable, all-ages. (Parking/some rides cost extra.)
- Saint Louis Science Center — hands-on exhibits, free general admission; planetarium and special exhibits extra. A storm-proof favorite.
- Forest Park — huge city park containing the Zoo, Science Center, Art Museum, and History Museum—several free stops in one place.
- Gateway Arch National Park — ride the tram to the top of the 630-ft Arch (tickets) and explore the riverfront and museum.
- The Magic House (St. Louis Children’s Museum) — a phenomenal hands-on museum for the younger kids (admission fee; in Kirkwood).
- City Museum — wild, one-of-a-kind playground/art space for older kids and teens (admission fee).
Pick One Anchor
It’s a longer drive, so choose one main thing and keep it relaxed:
- Little kids: Zoo or Magic House.
- Mixed ages: Forest Park (Zoo + Science Center, both free).
- Older kids/teens: City Museum or the Arch.
Tips for the Group
- Leave early, plan for traffic, and pack water/snacks (city heat + walking).
- Pick a meet-up spot and time so families can split and regroup.
- A full St. Louis day might mean dinner out instead of a camp dinner—plan the meal schedule around it.
- Storms in the forecast? St. Louis museums are the air-conditioned, indoor answer.
