St. Charles Historic District

About 45 minutes south: a walkable riverfront, brick streets, history, and ice cream.

Historic Main Street

St. Charles has a beautifully preserved historic Main Street along the Missouri River—cobblestone-feel brick streets, shops, candy stores, and casual restaurants. Easy, shaded, stroller-friendly walking; a nice low-key outing for mixed ages.

  • Lewis & Clark Boat House & Nature Center — riverfront museum about the famous expedition that launched from here; replica boats kids can see up close.
  • First Missouri State Capitol — the state’s original capitol building, restored and tourable.
  • Frontier Park — green space along the river, good for a picnic and a run-around.
  • The Foundry Art Centre — art studios and exhibits if anyone wants a creative stop.

Good with Kids

  • Plenty of ice cream and candy shops to keep little ones motivated.
  • Mostly flat, walkable with riverfront breezes.
  • Short museum visits + park time = a balanced half-day.

Tips

  • Go in the morning to beat heat and afternoon storms; back to camp for dinner.
  • Parking is easiest on weekday mornings.
  • Check special summer events along the riverfront before you go.
