Winfield — Mississippi River
Big-river country, about 25–30 minutes east: barges, a working lock & dam, and eagles.
Lock & Dam No. 25
On the Mississippi near Winfield, you can watch towboats push barge tows through a working lock—a genuinely cool engineering show for kids and adults. There’s river access, a chance to see the dam’s gates, and great big-river views.
- Best for: kids who love big machines; anyone who likes a river.
- Bring: binoculars, water, hats—there’s not much shade on the river.
- Bonus: in cooler months this stretch is famous for bald eagles; in summer you may still spot herons, egrets, and ospreys.
Along the Great River Road
This area is part of Missouri’s stretch of the Great River Road. A relaxed drive along the river gives you:
- River overlooks and boat ramps
- Small river towns for a snack or ice cream
- Bottomland wildlife viewing (herons, turtles, waterfowl)
Make It a Morning
- Go early before the heat; watch a barge lock through, then head back for a midday beach session at Lake Lincoln.
- Combine with a Troy stop for lunch and ice on the way back.
River safety: the Mississippi is powerful—no swimming or wading here. Keep kids back from the water’s edge and away from barge/lock areas.
